Mr. Mayor, tear down that tree!!

If you haven't heard, there is a new chapter in the annual Christmas tree controversy. As usual, an athiest has objected to a 'giving tree' set up at the city hall in Bellevue, Washington. As the article states, the tree was set up to represent the generosity of the season. Can you please tell me what is offensive about a tree? I guess it is the deep religious overtones of the Christmas tree that are so offensive. Of course you remember how Joseph and Mary decorated a tree right there among the animals shortly after the birth of Jesus, right? Uh, sure.
The Christmas tree has long been recognized by the courts and sane people as a secular symbol of the holiday season in general and any insinuation that it is a religious symbol is purely ridiculous. I guess athiests will finally be happy when our society is stripped of all public observances, religious or otherwise.
